Followup: Jon at Vintage RVA has the flyer for that Dead Kennedys/Front Line show that produced that Jon Stewart moshing photo. Based on the date, I can tell you that Red Cross’s original singer, Frank Gresham, had quit the band a month earlier, and was replaced by Crispy (real name Richard Cranmer), at which time the band changed their name to White Cross. The more famous lineup of White Cross featured Dewey Rowell on bass and Rob Mosby on drums, but for a few months after the name change, the original Red Cross rhythm section of Alford Faulkner (bass) and Scott Price (drums) was still part of White Cross. Considering the fact that White Cross also played this show, I’d say the likelihood that then-White Cross bassist Alford Faulkner is the person that people think is Jon Stewart in that photo has risen to nearly 100%.
I mean, I still can’t prove it, but it’s orders of magnitude more likely than the possibility that that really is Jon Stewart. Sorry everyone.
P.S. Hey, check it out, Void played that show too!
