This is the kind of thing I don’t believe you see too often anymore in the major media markets. Ames, Iowa’s own Radio Moscow, whose self-titled debut album was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, stopped by their hometown a few weeks ago. The singer threw his guitar at the drummer, knocking over a cymbal and a floor tom. The drummer threw it back— requiring 14 stitches.

Yeah, I saw this video when it came out last month. There was clearly a lot of tension in the lineup at this point, and once I saw not only the raw footage but the way the video is constructed to spin the incident in favor of the guitar player and against the drummer, it became clear to me exactly why that is: the guitar player in this band is a dick. I mean seriously—watch the video. Regardless of how hard they tried to construct it in a way that makes him look like the victim, he’s clearly the aggressor in the situation, and he clearly got what was coming to him. And by the way, if you look closely, you can see that the headstock of the guitar hits the drummer in the throat.

Radio Moscow has a new rhythm section now—I figure within a year or so there’s a story about how they beat the guy up and quit the band too. The lesson here is this: be Jay Reatard if you want to (and honestly, I don’t know why you’d want to—the dude came to a pretty sordid and untimely end), but be prepared to defend yourself when violence inevitably erupts, or you’ll get fucked up—and everyone will say you deserved it.
